Knee pain

Knee pain is an umbrella term, which encompasses a variety of conditions which all cause pain around the knee. These range from soft tissue conditions such as bursitis, quadriceps or patella tendonitis and variety of bony and cartilage conditions within the knee such as joint surface (chondral) damage, cartilage tears and knee arthritis. Read more about the treatment of knee pain.

Knee cartilage injuries

There are two types of cartilage within the knee. Joint surface cartilage, also known as chondral cartilage, and the shock-absorbing cartilage, medically known as the meniscus. Either can be damaged within the knee, either as the cause of a sporting injury or as a consequence of age related degenerative change. Once damaged, they often don’t heal because they have a relatively poor blood supply. Read more about the treatment of knee cartilage injuries.

Patella (kneecap) instability

Some patients have an inherently unstable kneecap either because of generally flexible joints, the shape of the kneecap and the groove it sits in or a combination of the two. Other patients sustain an injury causing their kneecap to become unstable. The condition is more common in females and repeated episodes can cause the kneecap or the thighbone to become damaged leading to premature wear of the joint. Read more about the treatment of patella instability.

Knee ligament injuries

There are four major ligaments around the knee, the two collateral ligaments on the sides and the two cruciate ligaments in the middle of the knee. Twisting injuries to the knee during sports or other activities can damage these ligaments leading to partial or complete tears (ruptures). Read more about the treatment of knee ligament injuries
