The Wellington's medical teams are led by consultants at the top of their profession, supported by the very latest medical technology including the most advanced diagnostic imaging equipment available today.
Some of the treatments provided by the Wellington's team of orthopaedic surgeons are listed below:
Lumbar interbody fusion (anterior, transforaminal or posterior) - a procedure used to treat conditions such as spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, fractures and to relieve back and leg pain attributed to degenerative disc disease.
Microdiscectomy - a discectomy is usually undertaken to treat conditions such as a prolapsed disc (slipped disc), and to relieve leg pain.
Decompression/Laminectomy - similar to a discectomy in that it is performed to alleviate pain caused by nerve impingement.
Disc nucleus replacement - a procedure is utilised to relieve the pain caused by degenerative disc disease.
Total disc replacement - aimed at relieving pain caused by discogenic pain in the lumbar area. This is achieved by replacing a diseased disc with a metal prosthetic disc.
Discography - normal discs are surrounded by nerves in the tissues. A tear in this tissue may trigger the formation of new nerve endings in the injured area and these nerves may then be irritated by the chemicals within any spinal fluid leakage resulting from a herniated disc, producing pain.
Cervical discectomy - the cervical spine is the top seven vertebra which make up the neck. Pain here may result from a herniated disc or bony outgrowths (bone spurs or osteophytes) which can form when joints calcify in the spine. This nerve root compression, the source of the pain, can be relieved with an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion.
Minimally invasive spinal surgery - thoracoscopy, laparoscopy and endoscopy are all terms used to describe a range of 'minimally invasive' approaches to surgery. The endoscope allows the surgeon to have a magnified and illuminated view of the site of the operation without making a large incision.
Spinal surgery for trauma - although the spine is protected by discs, ligaments and muscles it is just as vulnerable to traumatic injury as the rest of the skeletal system.
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
Occasionally, spinal patients need complex rehabilitation support, so the Spinal Unit is linked with comprehensive multi-disciplinary treatment programmes to maximise patients' functional abilities. The Wellington also assists with psychological and emotional support in adapting to disability, and provides comprehensive therapy programmes for patients suffering from conditions as varied as amputation, post complex orthopaedic surgery and post critical illness.
The Wellington Hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit has an international reputation for the excellence of its work. The dedicated unit has forty-six purpose-designed en suite rooms and every room is equipped with facilities to make each patient’s stay as comfortable and as convenient as possible with plenty of space for visiting family members and friends.
World class orthopaedic care in London
The Wellington's approach to spinal treatments is always to focus on the patient and quality of care, integrating the expertise of the most appropriate specialists to produce the best outcome for the patient. This means different spine specialists working collaboratively in one centre; orthopaedic spine surgeons with neurosurgeons, anaesthesists with neuroradiologists in a pain clinic.
