Hepatology, HPB surgery and liver transplant services at the Royal Free London Private Patients Unit

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is a leading centre for the diagnosis and treatment of all conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary tree. 

The Royal Free hospital hosts one of the two Liver Transplant and Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) Units in London and is a designated cancer centre for the treatment of tumours of the liver and pancreas. The institute has the largest Neuroendocrine Tumour service in the United Kingdom, which is nationally funded, as a result of which a large number of neuroendocrine pancreatic primary and liver secondaries are treated in this unit.

The recent designation as an Academic Health Science Centre (UCL Partners), in partnership with University College Hospital, Great Ormond Street and other key hospitals provides a huge range of investigatory and therapeutic options. No other collaborative group in the United Kingdom can offer a similar service. The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Partnership clinical and academic services rank in the world's top ten, with a superb international reputation for its research, service and education.

A large number of specialists work in the HPB and Liver Transplant Unit. A multidisciplinary approach is crucial in the management of their patients and about 50 consultants cover different areas of expertise. Surgeons, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, nuclear medicine physicians, histopathologists, virologists and microbiologists have regular scheduled meetings to discuss the best treatment plan. Extensively trained nursing staff, clinical nurse specialists, transplant co-ordinators, perfusionists, dieticians and physiotherapists all contribute to the multidisciplinary approach.

Finally, the unit benefits from technical equipment and expertise which only a liver transplant centre can offer, including the outstanding skills of the anaesthetic and intensive care personnel. All of this ultimately translates into excellent clinical results and improved patient safety.

Cardiac imaging and cardiology services

The diagnostic secondary and tertiary cardiology services of their cardiology department are state of the art, delivered by a large multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled consultant cardiologists supported by cardiac physiologists, radiographers, administrative staff and nurses, each of whom has a specialist interest in acute nursing.

It is also a centre for integrated cardiac imaging with state of the art echocardiography, cardiac CT and access to MRI.

Invasive cardiology 

The trust is one of London`s eight designated “heart attack centres” providing 24/7 emergency angioplasty treatment for patients presenting with acute ST elevation myocardial infarction. This service admits patients directly, by-passing A&E, for immediate consultant delivered treatment. The Royal Free has the overall best performance for the speed of treating heart attack patients, in London and was runner-up in the BMJ Awards Secondary Care Team of the Year 2010.

There is a comprehensive service for permanent pacemaker insertion and device therapy including the implantation of cardio defibrillators (ICD) and atrio-biventricular pacemakers for heart failure patients.

Carcinoid heart disease 

The Royal Free has the largest carcinoid heart disease clinic in Europe and specialises in treating patients with complex valvular heart disease.

Adult pulmonary hypertension 

The Royal Free is a national centre for adult pulmonary hypertension specialising in treating patients with scleroderma associated pulmonary hypertension. It has an international reputation for its quality of service and research portfolio.

Cardiac amyloid

The Royal Free specialises in the treatment of patients with cardiac amyloidosis and works closely with the team from the National Amyloid centre.

Inherited hypercholesterolaemia

The department has a dedicated lipid team looking after patients with raised cholesterol together with clnics and expertise in cardiovascular risk prevention and weight management. It is a national centre for patients and families with inherited (familial) hypercholesterolaemia.
