Mr Lars Neumann trained in shoulder and elbow surgery at Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital Nottingham UK. The Danish born consultant went on to be awarded his Orthopaedic Specialist Accreditation in Denmark and has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospitals, Nottingham, UK since 1995. His clinical and academic work is now exclusively inthe field of shoulder and elbow surgery.
He is also an examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and frequently hosts clinical visitors, and international travelling fellows from scientific societies abroad.
Mr Neumann has also been awarded various prizes, including the European Travelling Fellowship of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society 1996 and the Japanese Exchange Travelling Fellowship from the European Shoulder and Elbow Society 1999.
Innovative shoulder and elbow surgery pathways and procedures
He has introduced novel procedures in his practice, which together with innovations by his anaesthetist, Dr A Dyson, has made the practice very safe, effective and up to date with the most recent developments in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. He has been involved in the design of various instruments, implants, ligament substitutes and a shoulder replacement system. He has also developed novel surgical techniques.
Being heavily involved in Scientific Society work both nationally and internationally and providing peer-reviews for several of the world’s leading Orthopaedic Journals he keeps himself up to date with new developments within his field.
Most of his procedures are undertaken as day cases; joint replacements are usually done as 24 hour admissions, depending on circumstances. Essentially all procedures are carried out under regional anaesthesia, although general anaesthesia can be provided at the patient's request. The majority of work undertaken is keyhole surgery but he also carries out conventional open procedures when needed, such as for joint replacement surgery of the shoulder and elbow and complex revision surgery.
Mr Neumann also has a tertiary practice which provides advice to colleagues and treatment of patients fom outside the local catchment area both for primary and revision procedures.
His National Health Service patients are seen through the Free Choice Network (FCN) and the Choose and Book (CAB) scheme. The NHS patients are seen alongside his private patients in his clinic at the Park Hospital in Nottingham, where he personally sees all NHS Shoulder and Elbow patients referred to this hospital. These appointments take place on dedicated slots on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Research interests
Mr Neumann partakes in active research and teaches at international postgraduate level, and also receives international trainees (Fellows) who want to sub-specialise in shoulder and elbow surgery for one-year attachments.
