Miss Michelle Fynes MD MRCOG DU is the Lead Consultant for The Department of Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery and Urogynaecology at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London. This unit is one of the largest tertiary referral centres for Urogynaecology in the United Kingdom. She also holds several private clinics at Parkside Hospital, The Lister Hospital Chelsea and Alexander House in Wimbledon, SW19.

Miss Fynes is registered at Parkside Hospital (from 2003), The Lister Hospital Chelsea (from 2010) and Alexander House Wimbledon (from 2008). She holds regular private clinics at these centre’s and operates all day Saturday alternate weeks at Parkside Hospital (8-10 cases on average).

Miss Fynes is a member of British Society of Urogynaecology, International Continence SocietyInternational Urogynaecology Association and International Society for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. Miss Fynes is also an accredited subspecialty training programme Director for Urogynaecology (RCOG) based at St. George’s Hospital London. She also runs one to two Fellowships in urogynaecological surgery.

Miss Fynes is a sub specialty accredited Urogynaecologist and Reconstructive Pelvic Floor Surgeon with dual accreditation in the UK (RCOG) and Australia / New Zealand (RANZCOG).

Urogynaecological and gynaecological services available in London

Miss M Fynes provides a professional service for the assessment and treatment of a wide range of gynaecological issues which includes the following:  

Bladder function:

  • Cystitis (urinary infection)

  • Urge / frequency (overactive or urgent bladder)

  • Urge incontinence (leak with urge)

  • Stress incontinence (leak with exercise or activity)

  • Voiding difficulty (problem with bladder emptying)

  • Painful bladder symptoms (interstitial cystitis)

  • Bedwetting

  • Coital incontinence (leaks during sex)

 

Bowel function:

  • Constipation / difficulty with bowel emptying

  • Bowel incontinence

  • Urgent / frequent bowel symptoms

 

Sexual function:

  • Painful sex

  • Too loose or too tight problems

  • Loss of libido (interest) and other difficulties

  • Vaginismus

Vaginal support:

  • Lax vagina or prolapse (vaginal bulge or lump)

  • Vaginal wind

 

Childbirth / pregnancy related issues:

  • Incontinence or other bladder problems

  • Painful perineum or wound healing issues

  • Sexual difficulties

  • Cosmetic vaginal issues after childbirth

 

General and adolescent gynaecology:

  • Painful or heavy periods

  • Enlarged or asymmetric labia

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  • Pre-menstrual syndrome / pelvic pain

Investigations and treatment

After some consultations it may be necessary to have some form of investigation (test) to determine diagnosis or if further treatment is required. Investigations often involve blood tests, ultrasounds and gynaecology scanning and bladder tests.  

If an operative procedure is required, Miss Fynes undertakes surgery on Saturdays and on occasional weekdays at the Parkside Hospital. Surgery may be arranged at other centres on request.

Outpatient clinics

The following investigations or treatments can be undertaken during an outpatient consultation:

  • Cervical smear

  • Fitting of an IUCD (Including Mirena System)

  • High Vaginal Swab (HVS)

  • Blood tests

  • HPV screening

  • Urine screening

  • Ultrasound

Outpatient investigations

The following investigations can be undertaken as an outpatient and you will be required to book a follow up appointment. Once you have had your investigations the results will be given to Miss Fynes. 

  • Urodynamic assessment

  • Bladder scan

  • Anorectal manometry

  • Renal ultrasound

  • General gynaecological scanning

  • Assessment of childbirth injury

  • 3D / 4D ultrasound

Treatment for gynaecological and urogynaecological conditions and female incontinence

The following operations require treatment in hospital and some can be carried out as a day procedure. Others may require you to stay overnight.

General gynaecology

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy

  • Hysteroscopy (+/- polypectomy, curettage, insertion of Mirena)

  • Treatment of Bartholin’s cyst

  • Abdominal hysterectomy

  • Ovarian cystectomy (removal of ovarian cysts)

  • Myomectomy (removal of fibroids)

Urogynaecology

  • Vaginal hysterectomy

  • Prolapse repair (bladder, bowel, combined, complex.

  • Prolapse repair correcting the uterus (uterine re-suspension)

  • Vault prolapse repair (sacrocolpopexy)

 

Incontinence

  • Botulinum Toxin (urge, frequency, bladder injections)

  • Mid-urethral sling (TVT, TOT)

  • Colposuspension

  • Bladder neck sling
