Dr VandenBurg  is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.  His training in Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Therapeutics was in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital where he trained under Professor Paul Turner.

Research Interests in Clinical Pharmacology

His research interests were the effect of medicines on hormones, neuropeptides, and quality of life.

Drug Development

He has developed drugs in most therapeutic areas including prescription medicines for cardiovascular disease, psychological and psychiatric conditions, sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and for the treatment of gastroenterological, rheumatological, neurological, ophthalmic and many other conditions.

Key Achievements

He was Research Director at Merck Sharp & Dohme and was responsible for the UK and European registration for a number of compounds and was on the Global Development Committee.

He was responsible for the UK and European registration of 40 pharmaceutical preparations and the worldwide registration of an antiarrhythmic, antiepileptic, antibiotic and hypnotic. 

He has published widely many clinical studies as well as on clinical trial methodology and regulatory practice. 

He was responsible for the globalisation of good clinical practice and his book ‘Good Clinical Practice for Investigators’ achieved sales in excess of 50,000. 

He owned and lectured in a training company for the pharmaceutical industry.  

He has published over 200 papers and lectured widely. 

Illegal Drugs

In relationship to illegal drugs, he is experienced in the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of all substances including their physical and mental effects .  He is particularly interested in passive smoking, inhalation and absorption of illegal substances, and their effects on behaviour, criminal intent and mens rea.

He is an experienced medico legal expert witness and has been involved in many high profile cases.

He was a Medical Advisor to Release, the drug assistance charity. 

He also has extensive experience in the effects of alcohol and an interest in the effects of alcohol, prescription medicine and illegal substances on drink/drug driving and drink/drug sexual assault.
